Lara Koopmans-Hiller
Lead Teacher | Snow Lions
Lara (she/her) is a longtime resident of the Hudson Valley, with nearly a decade of experience in the classroom as both a lead teacher and an assistant teacher. This year, she is stepping into the role of Lead Teacher for the Snow Lions (kindergarten). We are eager to welcome her as part of the Middle Way team!
In my initial visit to Middle Way School, I was impressed by the quality of education that students are receiving—the intentionality of the community and the thoughtful approach to introducing Buddhist teachings. Furthermore I was simply charmed by the Snow Lions! I am thrilled to continue my journey in teaching at the Middle Way School.
I come to MWS from Poughkeepsie Day School, where I have been a third- and fourth-grade teacher. I have also been an assistant teacher for kindergarten at the United Nations International School and a co-teacher in the fours classroom at Sarah Lawrence’s Early Childhood Center. In the latter role, I came to appreciate child-centered, play-based learning in the Reggio Emilia tradition.
More recently, I have pursued professional development in Preventing Academic Failure (PAF), which interested me to learn of its applications in early childhood. I hold a certificate in Students with Disabilities 1–6 and a degree in Childhood General and Special Education.
Outside of the classroom, I have enjoyed studying Yoga Nidra under the tutelage of Yogi Amrit Desai. I have a grown son who recently graduated from the University of Toronto. I live with my husband and rambunctious Irish Setter. In my free time, I enjoy reading poetry and visiting with family.
