June Omura

MOVEMENT TEACHER

June teaches a weekly dance and movement class to all grades. She has an extraordinary sense of movement and space and is brings joy and bright energy into each class. In 2019-2020, June was also an assistant teacher for the Dragons class.

I am overjoyed to be part of Middle Way and to have found a place where all the threads of my interests and passions (reading and writing, dance and music, science and art, children and how children learn) may be woven into my teaching practice. I have a Master’s of Arts in Teaching English from SUNY-New Paltz and a BA in English and Program in the Arts from Barnard College; in between studying for those degrees I toured the world as a dancer with the Mark Morris Dance Group. For six years after my touring days, I taught as a high school English teacher and as a college English Composition instructor, but I still continued to perform with the Dance Group when possible, including as recently as this past December, in Brooklyn. I have also taught at the Huguenot Street Cooperative Nursery School and at Duzine Elementary School in New Paltz, NY, where my husband and I are raising our twin daughters, Emi and Kira, and our son, Henry. Fifteen years of reading to and listening to my own children as they learned to speak, read, write, and think has been a magical time. Every child’s journey to literacy and numeracy should be a magical time, and my hope for the students at the Middle Way School is that I can foster and support them in that journey. It is an honor to be a part of it.
