Flannery Harper

Assistant Teacher | Wild Horses + Snow Lions

Flannery serves as the Assistant Teacher for our Wild Horses age group, and supports our Snow Lions class in the afternoon. Her thoughtful responsiveness and perceptive attention to each student are precious additions to the early-childhood experience. We’re thankful to benefit from Flannery’s natural steadiness and skillful understanding.

I’m thrilled to be joining the team at Middle Way School as an Assistant Teacher for the Snow Lions and Wild Horses.

Born and raised in Memphis, TN, I also spent three years of my childhood in Lima, Peru. As a teenager, I began my journey in the world of nonviolent community activism. At the same time, I was introduced to Buddhism and meditation, which have been a central and evolving part of my life. I’m so excited to work in a community with Buddhist philosophies at its core.

After graduating from Bard College, I co-lead a program called Bridge Builders CHANGE in Memphis—a fellowship for high school student activists who receive training and lead social justice campaigns aimed at creating policy and cultural change. I worked closely with students on a daily basis and wrote and facilitated curricula in response to their needs and the development of their campaigns. During my time there, I helped introduce mindfulness-based practices to support students and staff work in more sustainable and regenerative ways.

I’ve also worked as a 1:1 aide for children with different abilities, overseeing an education plan including the development of study habits and critical thinking, as well as providing tutoring in STEM, history, and English. I have cared for children of various ages over the years and understand the nuances of needs each family might encounter.

Since moving back to the Hudson Valley in 2022, I’ve worked as a nanny, tutor and artist. I love making art, working with young people, and engaging in spiritual practice. I’m passionate about creating and embodying a world in which everyone can thrive as themselves.

I also enjoy walking, reading, painting, meditating, spending time with friends and dogs, and collaborating on creative projects.
