David Boylan
Buildings and Grounds Manager
We were overjoyed when David joined us in 2021 to oversee our buildings and grounds. It’s a big job: from preparing the campus to open in all kinds of weather, to overseeing maintenance and repair projects; from ensuring we are in compliance with safety codes, to attentively caring for and tending to the space—all of which David tends to with kindness and humor. We can always count on him to blast some Whitney Houston through the speakers if we need more pep in our step. David is also an active member of the MWS community as a parent to Louis, one of our Ravens.
I grew up in Woodstock and started out as a visual artist, and over the past 20 years I have worked as a teaching artist, assistant preschool teacher, house painter, woodworker, art handler, warehouse manager, and most recently as the Facilities Director at Art Omi, a sculpture park and artists’ residency center in Ghent, NY. All of this experience has led me to where I am today, and I am thrilled to be joining MWS as the Buildings and Grounds Manager.
What I love about buildings and grounds, and education, is that there is always something to do and the needs of people and programs are everchanging, and that the act of problem solving is endlessly creative. If I can improve something and make the site safer, or someone’s job a little bit easier, then I have succeeded. I knew that this would be the right place for me when I saw the care and appreciation MWS has for the natural environment. I believe that we are not owners but guests and caretakers on the site, and we must treat it with ultimate respect.
When I am not at work I am at home in Catskill with my partner, six year old child, chihuahua, and cat, learning to play guitar and making stuff and out of old junk.
