Dan Shornstein

Education Advisor

For the past few years, I have served as an educational advisor to the leadership team at Middleway School. My background in education spans a career of over 45 years as a teacher, school principal, head of school, and camp director. I have extensive experience in providing  professional development workshops via Orange Ulster BOCES  in  leadership development, best practices in special education, behavior management and effective educational practice.

When I was 10 years old, my mother started a not for profit summer camp called Johnny Appleseed. I spent many summers as a camper and later as camp director which helped form a strong foundation for my humanistic approach to  educational career.

I  retired from the Arlington Central School District in 2018 but I continue to consult and facilitate workshops for school leaders, teachers and staff. My teaching  experience includes many years  in both private and public education and I also served as education director at The Ashokan Center helping revitalize the outdoor education curriculum and program.

In addition to my educational work, I am a landscape painter and an active member of the Tivoli Artists Gallery. I am inspired by the beauty of the Hudson Valley region but also spend time painting each year on Monhegan Island as well as the Adirondecks.

I live in Saugerties with my wife Robin and have two adult children, Evan and Iyla.
